Obi 5

purchase information
Obi (帯, おび) is a sash for traditional Japanese dress, keikogi and part of kimono outfits worn by men and women beginning in the 1600’s.

There is a a particular formal elegance to this very interesting garment/appendage. I feel a casual softness that balances formality with comfort. The overall design brings a sophistication to a kimono made even with a relatively plain fabric.

These paintings are my abstract interpretations of the obi in various styles, colors and forms. I saw this garment lending to a simple composition with conceptual abstract design.

The Obi series are paintings, under high gloss resin on a two inch deep, wood, gallery box. Framing is unnecessary.
